Kulchur Lodge Radio #71 – A conversation with Millennial Woes
Recorded 12 Aug., 2024.
Susan Wojcicki, former YouTube CEO, died recently. She was in charge during the large-scale de-platforming and censorship of social media after 2017.
When I learned of her death, I invited Millennial Woes to discuss the early (wild) years of social media, how YouTube transformed the political landscape, how de-platforming started, and what we can expect from social media in the future.
NOTE: At about 1h 30min I experienced some tech problems, so I dropped out of the conversation a couple of times during the last 20 min. I’ve edited out the worst parts.
Topics include:
► The early lore of how Woes got started
► This is why it became successful
► Woes’s role model at the time
► “You felt like you were in a bar talking to this guy”
► “Isn’t that exactly what society should be like?”
► A lesson from classical rhetoric
► “It was something very innocent”
► “It was almost like I was being guided”
► “My favourite year”
► “We’ve reaching a point where censorship will be literally impossible”
► A completely unique moment in history
► “I realized we can actually fight back”
► The two platforms that really mattered
► “It doesn’t matter if you follow the rules”
► Primary reality vs. secondary reality
► Take a hint from your enemies
► A brief glimpse of what real democracy would look like
► “The party-goers are still at the party but the music stopped”
► “May she burn in hell”
► “It’s in the elite’s interest to NOT ban dissident media on alternative platforms”
► How Elon Musk’s Twitter/X changed the game
► “I feel quite optimistic actually”
► And much more…
